ENC 0025 - College Prep Writing II - (Brandon): Citation: Giving Credit

The purpose of this guide is to assist students in doing academic research for the class assignment.

MLA Citation Style

MLA Citation Style is used by writers to acknowledge the sources that they have used to write their paper or essay. Any time that a writer uses material that is not their own idea they should provide citation information to show where the information came from.

For example, if you are writing a paper on secondhand smoking, you will probably find research information in the form of articles, books and statistics. Each time you use information from one of these sources in your paper, you should make a notation of where the information came from.  Usually the information in the body of the paper includes the author's name and page number from the original source. At the end of the paper, you will compile the complete list of all references and format them in the proper MLA style.
