Primo -- the new HCC Libraries Discovery Search

by Jeremy Bullian on 2021-09-09T13:41:00-04:00 in General | 0 Comments

HCC Libraries migrated to a new library system this summer. While we are still ironing out some wrinkles, we have high hopes for the features and functionality our new system provides. We want to share some resources that may help you more quickly adjust to the new system. Roxanna Palmer, SouthShore librarian extraordinaire, has created a short (3min) video that goes over some basics of our new system (both links are the same video, just different platforms and both include closed captioning).

Share the video with students and/or embed a video into Canvas. You can also find steps to log in using our Login Help guide. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or issues, especially if you find any items acting weird in the new system. We love a good mystery!

More on Primo

As part of a state-wide initiative through FLVC, the HCC Libraries transitioned to a new discovery system/catalog, Primo. You will see major changes in the look and feel of the catalog, but individual databases have not changed. You can still access the list of databases by clicking the appropriate link at the top of the webpage.

  • Access Primo directly, through the HCC Libraries Online link in Canvas, or from the HCC Libraries website.
  • If prompted to login, select SSO for single sign on and use your HCC login info (email and password)
  • Advanced search is different, and uses the term any field instead of keyword for a general search
  • All results are Full Text by default, clicking the Expand My Results box will add additional results that are not full text
  • The peer-review filter is located on the left under Availability, peer-reviewed articles are labeled with a purple icon
  •  Publication Finder is now Find a Journal or Journal Search
  • Formatted citations are now available for book records
  • Citation linker or Fetch Item allows you to search for an item based on the item’s citation info
  • Newspaper Search is a catalog search solely dedicated to the newspaper format
  • You can learn more watching here or reading here
