ENC 1102 - Willman (Brandon): Assignment - Research Paper - Fall 2024

This guide is designed for students in Professor Willman's ENC 1102 course.

Assignment

Write a literary analysis essay of 1000 words minimum. Be sure to follow any feedback I provide regarding your proposed thesis statement and/or outline. You may choose one of the following stories for this assignment (do not choose the one you used for the character analysis):

  • Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut"
  • Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe
  • "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson
  • "My Dead Brother Comes to America" by Alexander Godin
  • "Rules of the Game" by Amy Tan

Remember, you are not writing about a character. You are analyzing the story with regard to theme, symbolism, or other literary elements.  Your thesis statement should include two parts: WHAT and WHY.
*WHAT: What claim are you making about the text?
*WHY: Why should we care? Why is your claim important? Your thesis should answer the “so what?” question.

These thesis templates might help:

"My Dead Brother Comes to America," by Alexander Godin, reveals themes of ___________, ________________. and __________.

The "Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe exhibits numerous gothic literary elements including ______________, _____________, and _______________.

Vonnegut uses ____________, _____________, and _____________ in "Harrison Bergeron" to criticize governmental control. (One item could be television.)

Kurt Vonnegut uses symbols in "Harrison Bergeron" to demonstrate control, oppression, and _____________.

In Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery,” the author uses _________, ________, and societal critique to convey a powerful message about the dangers of blindly following traditions. (symbolism could be one of the elements)

In "Rules of the Game," Amy Tan explores the complex dynamics of mother-daughter relationships and ___________. (something cultural could be the second point)

As with any essay, this one needs a proper introductory paragraph, body paragraphs that SUPPORT the thesis statement, evidence from the story in the form of SHORT quotes/paraphrases with in-text citations. The last page will contain the works cited entries.

The essay must include:

  • A minimum of two scholarly sources (from the library database or Google Scholar) and should avoid summary.  This scholarly research must be used in the body paragraphs to support your thesis, not in the introduction or conclusion. You may use ONLY the library database or Google Scholar (link on the left). You may NOT use SparkNotes, Wikipedia, blogs, or any .com source.
